Elicitation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Elicitation - Essay Example From this report it is clear that the Brisbane institute of Art was established in 1976 by Mervyn Moriarty and was incorporated as an association in 1984. The institute has established itself in a council owned base at Windsor, and is now at the halfway point of its twenty-year lease, that started in 1999. A major refurbishment of the building was started in 2011. The institute needs a clear and firm direction for the coming five years. The issues it needs to fulfil are the maintenance and enhancement of service delivery capacity, maintenance and improvement of financial status, an increment in satisfied student numbers, an increment in involvement of membership, refinement of annual business planning processes, and the promotion of the institute and elevation of its professional profile. This paper discusses that  an outside facilitator with experience in management f requirements was utilized to maximize the workshop’s success. During this session, brainstorming formed a vi tal part of proceedings. It was first important to ensure the participation of the right stakeholders, and then sell the concept of the workshop to them. The logistics of the workshop location were also worked out in advance to ensure effectiveness of the workshop. This included travel plans, lighting, and snacks packed with energy like sugary snacks.  The stakeholders were also prepared for the workshop via giving them information that was project-specific and preparing them to think outside the box.... The logistics of the workshop location were also worked out in advance to ensure effectiveness of the workshop. This included travel plans, lighting, and snacks packed with energy like sugary snacks. The stakeholders were also prepared for the workshop via giving them information that was project-specific and preparing them to think outside the box. The facilitator worked to establish and enforce the meeting’s rules, introduce the meeting’s goals and agenda, facilitate consensus making without participation in the content, and control any behaviour that was unproductive or disruptive. The stakeholders involved in the elicitation process were the management committee of Brisbane institute of Art. They included; the director of the institute, the administrative staff, the pro ject administrator, the bookkeeper, tutorial staff, and the maintenance staff. 2. Benchmark Analysis BIA is a non-profit association that provides employment on art time basis for arts workers and visual artists annually. It provides a collaborative and creative environment that provides support for artists via skill exchange, peer collaboration, and provision of opportunities for development and exhibition. The environment provided by the institution has nurtured many artists, emerging and established, some who have achieved prominence nationally. Over 1,500 students enrol in the institute’s classes annually, with many others attending their exhibitions. They also allow use of their facilities by other artists and organizations. The institute

Six Sigma and DMAIC Imporvement Process Coursework

Six Sigma and DMAIC Imporvement Process - Coursework Example There six sigma has proven to an effective tool for improving performance. Basically, the effective adoption of the six sigma facilitates quality improvement and efficient performance (Pande & Holpp, 2002). For a clear understanding of the benefits accrued from using the six sigma it is important to study its five phase, which are expressed as DMAIC. The five phase are definition of the problem (D) measuring/mapping the process (M), analyzing the cause of the problem (A), improving the situation (I) and finally controlling the implantation of the solution (C). The purpose of this study is to evaluate an article that focuses on a case study of an aluminum company. The issue of quality improvement has been very controversial among various companies. In essence, every company strives to outdo the competitors by producing unique products that are perceived to be of top quality. From the case study, it can be identified that the company faces considerable competition from other firms producing similar products. Earlier studies reveal that the six sigma model is an infective approach to quality improvement. Apparently. From the case study, it can be identified that the author recognizes the importance of six sigma in problem-solving. In addition, the author points out that DMAIC is an appropriate procedure to solve the problems facing the company. In essence, various scholars encourage the use DMAIC in solving business challenges (Breyfogle, 2003). It is important to note that businesses are usually exposed to problems and that these problems have to be solved cautiously to mitigate adverse consequences. Apparently, the quality of a product is an important component as far as generation of profits is concerned (George, 2002). In essence, a company whose products are of high quality enjoys a better market share compared to that whose products are of low quality. Both the author of the article and the existing studies argue

Woody Contruction Company Essay Example for Free

Woody Contruction Company Essay The Custom Woodworking Company is a small-to-medium sized custom furniture and cabinet making company located in Someplace, British Columbia. It is represented by Ron Carpenter, CEO, his wife Emelia Carpenter, the president and their son John Carpenter, the director. The company is privately held with approximately 850 employees. Throughout the years, they quickly gained reputation for attractively designed and well-constructed furniture and built up a loyal staff and work force. Woody 2000 project started in 1989, as a result of a boom in the commercial construction activities and the intentions of the management. The production floor of The Custom Woodworking Company was to expand by 25% with an estimated budget of 17 million dollars. The timeframe for this would be approximately 18 months. This expansion would include an equipment installation of semi-automatic woodworking trains, which requires both software and hardware to operate the system. Introduction: A Project Manager is a person responsible for accomplishing project objectives. These objectives include initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling and closing of the project. Project Management can be defined as being an art of controlling the cost, time, manpower, and hardware and software resources involved in a project. A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide (PMI 2008) define project management as â€Å"the application of knowledge, skills, tools and techniques to project activities to meet project requirements†. Successful organizations have some sort of project some time or another throughout the lifetime of the project. The owners and contractors have different ideas of what they want done. In the construction world the common bond is to create a successful project with high quality, desired completion date and the actual costs While reading through the Woody 2000 Project there were a few things that I discovered that could have been done to maybe enhance the project. Scope is very important in the definition of project requirements at the start of the project and if a portion of this is missed it can cause unforeseen extra cost and variation of cost and the final product. Defining the project scope is to identify all the work in details that the project will accomplish in order to achieve its final goal. The work includes the activities in which the project members have identified will be necessary to support the project and all the other instances surrounding delivery of the project. There was a lack of planning. The expansion was based on a mini boom in the construction industry, but no one took the time to conduct a statistical plan as to whether or not the boom was going to last and for how long. It may have been defined to the key players, but not to the actual people that need to know. In my opinion the project was not carefully planned out. Vice President of Finance and Administration, Spencer Moneysworth did not have the project management skills that was needed for this project. The fact that he decided not to involve the production people was a mistake. He should have included all key players from every section whether they were at management level or not. Because of the short suspense, and he did not want to waste any unnecessary time, he immediately invited the Expert Industrial developers (EID) to get a quote. There were poor management, VP Moneysworth may be good at Finance and Administration, but he lacked the management skills to make this project successful. There was not an actual project manager, which was needed because of the estimated cost for the project was given a cash flow versus working out the necessary details that was required and breaking down every section that was to be expanded, materials, resources and supplies. Timelines and budget were set without considering any internal or external problems. The initial objective was to increase production efficiency and keep up with the current demands, but the expansion quickly turned into an expansion of the current facility to an upgrade in offices. The completion date of the project and the amount were somewhat unrealistic. The company did create a monthly cash flow chart for the project. Another issue is that there was not an evaluation process that states when there would be another meeting or to check on progress of the project. Communication management which is also a vital part of any project was a flaw in this project. Having good communication will determine the flow of information. Effective communication can lead to a successful project and should be frequent and relevant. Another reason they should have communicated is because after they realize the price and time of the project they should have relook their approach. In conclusion the biggest problem that I see with Woody’s 2000 project is the planning and communication phase. They did not effectively plan and implement what they wanted to do and there was no communication between department heads and contractors. If they had planned properly and involved the right personnel they would have been more successful.

Studies on Adolescene of Piaget and Erikson Essay -- Compare Cognitive

Studies on Adolescene of Piaget and Erikson Adolescence is considered a difficult time of life and one in which a number of changes occur as the individual achieves a certain integration of different aspects of personality. One approach to the cognitive and emotional transitions made at different times of life is to consider how the changes in, say, adolescence are linked to a continuum of change beginning in childhood and continuing throughout life. Some theorists, such as Piaget, were interested primarily in the transitions of childhood and youth, while others, such as Erikson, saw all of life as a series of transitions and offered a continuum of stages covering all of life.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Piaget became fascinated in his early studies with his discovery that children of the same age often gave the same incorrect answers to questions, suggesting that there were consistent, qualitative differences in the nature of reasoning at different ages, not simply a quantitative increase in the amount of intelligence or knowledge. This discovery marked the beginning of Piaget's continuing effort to identify changes in the way children think; how they perceive their world in different ways at different points in development. Piaget's contributions can be summarized by grouping them into four main areas. First, he produced literature on the general stages of intellectual development from infancy through adulthood. This concern occupied him from 1925 to 1940, and after 1940 he began to describe some of the developmental stages in formal, structural terms using models from symbolic logic (Flavell, 1963, 1-9).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The different stages postulated by Piaget help to explain different rats of learning at different ages as well as the types of learning possible at different ages for the majority of the population. Learning itself is seen by Piaget as a process of discovery on the part of the individual, and learning as a formal activity becomes a system of organization by which instruction is enhanced by the way the teacher arranges experience. Learning is thus experiential, and Piaget suggests that experiences have meaning to the extent that they can be assimilated. Such assimilation does not take place without accommodation, an aspect of considerable importance from the point of view of adaptation and possible development:   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of the principal aims of the teacher wil... ...enerativity versus stagnation--the individual needs to be needed and to assist the younger members of society, and generativity is concerned with guiding the next generation. The last stage is that of ego integrity versus despair, and this is the time when the way the other conflicts were decided has an influence. If the preceding conflicts were not suitably handled, despair may result in later life (Liebert & Spiegler, 1982, 88-92).   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Piaget was most interested in the learning stages for the child, while Erikson carried his stages through the life cycle. Both indicate how the stage of adolescence is part of a continuum, however, prepared for by childhood and leading to adulthood. Further research may differentiate even more divisions over the adolescent years.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  References   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Flavell, J.H. (1963). The developmental psychology of Jean Piaget. The Creation of the Berlin Wall Essays -- Berlin Wall European History

The Creation of the Berlin Wall The end of World War II triggered the start of the Cold War. The victors of WWII, The United States, Great Britain, France and the Soviet Union divided Germany and Berlin into four. The United States, Great Britain, and France were all capitalist and democratic, and the Soviet Union was communist. The United States, Great Britain, and France all were part of the same â€Å"team.† The Soviet Union, however, wanted nothing to do with the others, so they decided to build a wall around their sector to keep the others out and their people in. (Divided In Unity 87). The Berlin Wall went up in the middle of the night, 2 a.m. on August 13, 1961. It was, at first a low barbed wire fence, and then workers used cement to construct a permanent structure that was 96 feet long, and about 12 feet high. (Kelly 1). Travel between east and west was nearly impossible due to the restrictions. There were 14,000 guards, 600 dogs, and approximately 302 watchtowers were placed to make sure that no one from the East escaped to the West. (The Wall). The Soviet Union had complete control over what went on in the Eastern sector. They had taken control of the only radio tower, and they decided what was broadcasted over it. It was a crime to listen to broadcasts from the West. (Kelly 2). And the newspapers that were produced in the East, the government had complete control over what was published in them: â€Å"Newspapers are the written voice of the state. Reporters do not launch independent investigation or expose government corruption. Journalists are more like secretaries, reporting what they are told, and nothing more.† (Kelly 4). People that were prisoners in the East yearned for the freedom that people had in the West. About 10,000 people tried escaping, around 5,000 made it, roughly 3,200 were jailed, and approximately 200 were killed and 200 injured from shootings at the Wall. One man, Peter Fechter who was an 18-year-old bricklayer, was shot while he was trying to escape, the guards wouldn’t let anyone help him, so he bleed to death. (Kelly 2). He ended up becoming a symbol of everyone killed at the Wall. People risked everything to get to the West, escaping over, through, and under the Berlin Wall. There were some pretty amazing ways that people found to escape. Kelly at The Freedom Forum, writes that, the Wetzel’s and St... ... was a huge separation. Not only between parts of the city and the government, but between families and what they believed in. People’s rights in the East were stripped from them. The government was the supreme voice of the city. People’s yearn to be free led them to do all sorts of ingenious, courageous, and deadly acts. The cost of their life outweighed the benefit of freedom. Works Cited â€Å"Escape Stories.† Associated Press. New York, N.Y.  © 2000 â€Å"Escaping Under the Berlin Wall.† Newsweek. March 8, 1999: 54. Exploring Methods Of Coast Protection Environmental Sciences Essay

A stipulation for a successful shoreline Restoration undertaking is that all the parties involved have some apprehension of the coastal morphological procedures. They are so in a place to understand why the present state of affairs has developed and why certain solutions will work and others will non. The followers should be considered in connexion with shoreline protection and direction undertakings: See the coastal country as a dynamic natural landscape. Make lone intercessions in the coastal procedures and in the coastal landscape if the involvements of the society are more of import than continuing the natural coastal resource. Appoint particular subdivisions of the seashore for natural development. Demolish inexpedient old protection strategies and re-establish the natural coastal landscape where possible. Minimise the usage of coastal protection strategies, give high precedence to the quality of the seashore resource, and concentrate on shore protection. Continue the natural fluctuation in the coastal landscapes. Restrict new development/housing close to the coastline in the unfastened uninhabited coastal landscape. Allow merely such installations, which require entree to the sea. Maintain and better the public entree to and along the beach, lawfully every bit good as in pattern. Reduce pollution and enhance sustainable use of coastal Waterss. This leads to the practical guidelines for shore protection in connexion with seashore protection, shore protection and shore Restoration undertakings. They are mentioned in the following paragraph. Work with nature, for case by re-establishing a starving coastal profile by nutriment and by using site-specific characteristics, such as beef uping semi-hard headlands. Choose a solution which fits the type of coastline and which fulfils as many of the ends set by the stakeholders and the governments as possible. It is rather frequently impossible to carry through all ends, as they are frequently conflicting and because of budget restrictions. It should be made clear to all parties, which ends are fulfilled and which are non. The adviser must do it wholly clear what the client can anticipate from the selected solution ; this is particularly of import if the undertaking has been adjusted to suit the available financess. Propose a support distribution, which reflects the fulfillment of the assorted ends, set by the parties involved. Manipulate the rate and gradient of the littoral impetus rate and gradient by usage of a minimal figure of constructions. Preserve subdivisions of untasted dynamic landscape where possible. Let protection steps merely if valuable buildings/infrastructure are threatened. This policy will continue the natural coastal resources and the neighbouring subdivisions will have stuff as a consequence of eroding in the unprotected country. Secure transition to and along the beach. Enhance the aesthetic visual aspect, e.g. by understating the figure of constructions. Few and larger constructions is usually better than a batch of little constructions. Preferably allow merely undertakings which deal with an full direction unit/sediment cell and which have maximum shore protection. Individual undertakings tend to concentrate on seashore protection. Minimise care demands to a degree, which the proprietor ( s ) of the strategy is able to pull off. A stand-alone nourishment solution may at first glimpse appear ideal, but it will usually non be ideal for the landholders, as recharge will be required at short intervals. Secure good local H2O quality and understate the hazard of pin downing dust and seaweed. Secure safety for swimmers by avoiding constructions bring forthing unsafe rake currents. Avoid protected beaches as these give a false feeling of safety for hapless swimmers. Protected beaches at exposed sites tend to endure from sand pin downing in the sheltered country. If the H2O is excessively unsmooth for swimming, a swimming pool, perchance in the signifier of a tidal pool, is a good solution. Provide good beach quality by procuring that the beaches are exposed to moving ridges, as the moving ridges maintain the attractive sandy beaches. This will of class limit the clip when swimming is possible, but doing protected beaches frequently means safety jeopardies, hapless beach quality and hapless H2O quality. Be realistic and matter-of-fact, maintaining in head that the natural untasted coastline is utopia in extremely developed countries. Create little attractive locations at otherwise strongly protected stretches if this is the lone realistic possibility.Overview of Types of Coast Protection, Shore Protection and Sea DefenceProtection of the seashore and the shore against the erosive forces of moving ridges, currents and ramp rush can be performed in many ways, and protection of the seashore and the backwoods against deluging adds even more types to the protection defense mechanism steps. The pick of the step in a given state of affairs depends on the three primary conditions: The job ( coast eroding, beach debasement or implosion therapy ) The morphological conditions ( the type of coastal profile and the type of coastline ) The land usage ( infrastructure/habitation, diversion, agribusiness etc. ) Some of the steps have chiefly one map, which e.g. is the instance for a revetment. It protects the seashore against eroding, but aggravates shore eroding. Beach nourishment, on the other manus, protects against seashore eroding every bit good as against shore debasement.Management of the seashoreDune stabilizationFrom Coastal WikiJump to: pilotage, hunt Dunes are a natural coastal characteristic on reasonably exposed and exposed seashores. Dunes are formed by the sand, which blows inland from the beach and is deposited in the country behind the coastline.BackgroundDuring storm rush events, the pes of the dunes can be eroded but the dunes act as a really flexible buffer zone, which protects the backwoods from eroding and implosion therapy. The scoured stuff supplies stuff to the littoral budget understating the general eroding along the full subdivision of shoreline. During the storm and besides during more normal events, sand will be transported inland, sometimes in connexion with the formation of air current back streets in the dune row. After the storm, the damaged dune will bit by bit be built up once more, possibly somewhat more inland. This means that a dune Acts of the Apostless as a natural flexible seashore protection and sea defense mechanism steps. It moves backwards parallel with the gnawing coastline and at the same clip it maintains its signifier and volume every bit good as a broad beach. This is a natural quasi-equilibrium state of affairs. The eroding of dunes as a consequence of a terrible storm rush is besides referred to as dune eroding. However, the natural balance will switch if the dune flora is damaged by croping or if beach-users, etc. bring forth excessively much traffic, etc. This may do the dunes to degrade ensuing in loss of the protection provided by the natural dunes. At the same clip the sand blowing inland causes assorted sorts of harm. Consequently, governments usually tend to protect dunes by modulating their usage. In some instances governments have been really eager to protect the dunes by seting marram grass and puting fascines in the air current back street to pin down the sand. ( Fascines are the placing of pine or titivate subdivisions ) . This has, in some instances, resulted in a complete repair of the dune place and an unnatural growing in tallness. Consequently, the flexibleness of the natural dune is lost ensuing in a gradual disappearing of the dune due to eroding, whereby the protection, provided by the natural dune system, is lost.MethodFig. 1. Marram planting and the placing of spruce fascines in air current back streets ( Danish Coastal Authority [ 1 ] ) . Planting marram grass and puting up spruce fascines for caparison of sand and sweetening of dune build up. Larger wind back streets can besides be filled unnaturally anterior to seting. However, as mentioned above, the protection should non be so comprehensive that it wholly fixes the dunes. Newly planted flora in peculiar can be strengthened by utilizing fertilizer. Restrictions for their usage can besides protect the dunes. Croping in dune countries is prohibited in most states, and governments frequently limit public entree. Such limitations may modulate the traffic in the dunes, e.g. by forbiding motor traffic. Different options are paved walk-to transitions in countries near parking tonss and fencing delicate freshly planted countries.Functional featureDune stabilization is a sustainable protection step, heightening the natural protection ability of dune countries. It protects against moving ridge and storm rush onslaught and at the same clip it preserves the natural coastal landscape, if performed reasonably. Dune stabilization requires a planned and coordinated attempt.ApplicabilityDune stabilization is applicable on all coastal types where natural dunes occur. This is particularly the instance on reasonably exposed to exposed seashores with perpendicular to really oblique moving ridge ( air current ) onslaughts, types 1M to4M and 1E to 4E . Artificial dunes are besides used as a sea defense mechanism construction.Cliff stabilizationFrom Coastal WikiJump to: pilotage, hunt Coastal drops can be unstable due to the combined consequence of several factors, discussed in this article along with methods to brace them.BackgroundCoastal drops can be unstable due to the combined consequence of several factors, such as: Erosion of the pes of the drop caused by wave action and storm rush Skiding or weathering of the incline due to geo-technical instability. The eroding of the pes of the drop usually initiates geotechnical instability, but the sliding/collapse can be of different nature depending on the geo-technical conditions of the incline. There are fundamentally three different state of affairss: If the stuff is non-cohesive stuff, the weathering of the drop ailment usually occur at the same time with the eroding of the pes as a talus formation, which is the aggregation of fallen stuff organizing a incline at the pes of the drop. If the stuff is a mixture of clay, silt, sand and bowlders, such as in the instance of moraine boulder clay, the incline can be really steep for a period due to the cohesive forces, but the incline will finally fall in. Smaller or bigger fractions of the drop will fall in connexion with groundwater force per unit area, frost impact or general weathering, or by skiding. Skiding will particularly happen in connexion with groundwater force per unit area. If the stuff consists of fictile clay or silty clay, the prostration of the drop will be in the signifier of slides, which can travel far behind the top of the drop. Weathering of the drop by air current conveyance of sand. This will be most marked if the drop stuff is sand ; nevertheless, besides exposed drops dwelling of other types of stuff can be eroded by sand blown over the drop from the beach.MethodThe basic cause of cliff instability is usually the marine eroding of the pes of the drop, extenuation of this is covered under the protection method: Revetment. Installing the revetment will except farther eroding of the pes, but at that phase the incline of the drop may really good be so steep that enduring and sliding may still happen. This can be counteracted by the undermentioned agencies: Artificial smoothing of the incline, if there is adequate infinite at the pes every bit good as at top of the drop for this. This will antagonize future uncontrolled weathering and sliding. Smoothing of the incline by make fulling with farinaceous stuff at the pes of the drop. This requires that there is sufficient infinite at the pes of the drop for the filling. Establish a flora screen on the drop. This can best be done by following the above-named smoothing of the incline. Good flora protects against enduring and groundwater ooze, and thereby to some extent against skiding Drain of groundwater. This can be used if the drop suffers from skiding due to high groundwater force per unit area and hapless drainage conditions. Horizontal and perpendicular drains can be used every bit good as the ordinance of the surface overflow. Cliff inclines are frequently aa‚ ¬Aâ€Å"protectedaa‚ ¬A? by dumping miscellaneous rubbish, such as subdivisions etc. , over the drop. It is a bad aa‚ ¬Aâ€Å"solutionaa‚ ¬A? because it does non halt the hazard of skiding. On the contrary, it spoils the flora and thereby increases the hazard of skiding.Functional featureCliff stabilization presupposes that the pes of the drop has been stabilised. Stabilization counteracts the natural behavior of drops to skid and endure. Such an active drop is portion of the dynamic coastal landscape and should therefore in rule be maintained as an incorporate portion of this landscape.ApplicabilityCliff stabilization can be applied at all reasonably exposed to open seashores ; nevertheless, in order to continue the dynamic coastal landscape drop stabilization should merely be used meagerly. Continuing the active drop at dumbly populated seashores is usually non executable due to the limited infinite. Consequently, cliff stabilization is usually merely used when there is sufficient infinite in the backland to let some smoothing.Repairing the coastline by constructionsDefinition of Breakwater:A construction dividing land and H2O countries. It is designed to forestall coastal eroding and other harm due to beckon action and storm rush, such as implosion therapy. Breakwaters are usually really monolithic constructions because they are designed to defy the full force of moving ridges and storm rush. In pattern, breakwaters and revetments are synonyms. Fig. 1. Examples of seawall constructions. A breakwater is constructed at the coastline, at the pes of possible drops or dunes. A breakwater is typically a aslant concrete construction ; it can be smooth, stepped-faced or curved-faced. A breakwater can besides be built as a rubble-mound construction, as a block breakwater, steel or wooden construction. The common feature is that the construction is designed to defy terrible beckon action and storm rush. A rubble-mound revetment frequently protects the pes of such non-flexible breakwaters. A rubble-mound breakwater bears a great similarity to a rubble-mound revetment ; nevertheless a revetment is frequently used as a addendum to a breakwater or as a stand-alone construction at less open locations. An open butch, which has been strengthened to defy wave action, is sometimes referred to as a breakwater.Functional featureThe about perpendicular breakwater, which was chiefly used in the yesteryear, had the unfortunate map of reflecting some of the moving ridge energy, whereby the eroding was aggravated, ensuing in accelerated disappearing of the beach. However, all sorts of breakwaters involve beach debasement as they are used at locations where the seashore is exposed to eroding. The breakwater will repair the location of the coastline, but it will non collar the on-going eroding in the coastal profile. On the contrary, it will to a varying grade, accelerate the eroding. It is rather normal that the beach disappears in forepart of a breakwater, and it will most frequently be necessary, after some old ages, to beef up the pes of the breakwater with a rubble revetment. A breakwater will diminish the release of deposits from the subdivision it protects and will hold a negative impact on the sediment budget along next shorelines.ApplicabilityA breakwater is a inactive construction, which protects the seashore against eroding and implosion therapy. Breakwaters were ( are ) frequently used at locations off exposed metropolis foreparts, where good protection was needed and where infinite was scarce. Promenades have frequently been constructed on top of these breakwaters. They are besides used along other less inhabited seashores, where combined seashore protection and sea defense mechanism is desperately needed. Breakwaters are chiefly used at open seashores, but they are besides used at reasonably open seashores.Definition of Revetment:A revetment is a facing of rock, concrete units or slabs, etc. , built to protect a scarp, the pes of a drop or a dune, a butch or a breakwater against eroding by wave action, storm rush and currents. This definition is really similar to the definition of a breakwater, nevertheless a revetment does non protect against deluging. Furthermore, a revetment is frequently a addendum to other types of protection such as breakwaters and butchs.Emergency ProtectionFrom Coastal WikiJump to: pilotage, hunt The undermentioned article discusses exigency protection of seashores. Emergency protection steps are by nature rapidly built and non good designed steps.MethodTypical edifice methods and stuffs are the undermentioned: Rock dumping. Without filter beds, frequently excessively steep and low, without proper toe protection, which means that they are unstable Sand sacking, sometimes supported by wooden hemorrhoids. Often excessively low and without toe protection etc. The cloth is non lasting, which means that such protection will fall in after a really short period Dumping of other sorts of material easy at manus, such as different sorts of concrete pieces, edifice stuffs, old tyres etc.Functional featuresEmergency protection steps are typically holding the undermentioned features: They are unstable and therefore non supplying proper protection They need changeless care and supply of new stuffs They are ever inactive, and promotes farther loss of beach They are botching the natural beauty of the beach They prevent transition of the beach They pollute the beach with unnatural elements, such concrete dust, bricks, gum elastic and plasticApplicabilityPrivate and public land proprietors are sometimes forced to â€Å" build † exigency protection at locations where â€Å" unexpected † eroding occurs. The exigency protection is installed in order to forestall farther harm to coastal installings. â€Å" Unexpected † can hold different causes as discussed in the followers: Unexpected can be in the signifier of a rare of utmost event, such as a tidal moving ridge state of affairs or the transition of cyclone Unexpected can be the development of ongoing eroding at locations where it has non been possible to supply financess for a proper and timely protection Unexpected can be due to miss of cognition to coastal procedures and/or informations, whereby eroding seems to be unexpected despite the fact that it could hold been foreseen if proper monitoring and coastal probes had been practised Emergency protection can to a great extent be avoided by proper monitoring, shaving and support.Definition of Bulkhead:A bulkhead is a construction or divider used to retain or forestall sliding of the land. A secondary intent is to protect the seashore against harm from wave action.

Then he started to make lodging undertaking and development in a little graduated table and so developed to large building development Company. Syuen Hotel was billed by his ain building company and that s where he started his hotel line concern. As Mr. Yan s concern grew, he started to put in other states by purchasing lands and edifice hotels. Mr. Yan opened the 2nd hotel in Laos and started to develop the state to a better and more civilised state. As times passed by Mr. Yan besides invested in lumber concern and tea plantations. Mr.Yan left the direction to Miss Maggie Ong to pull off Syuen Hotel. Miss Maggie is the manager of this hotel and she used all her expertness, web and accomplishments to convey up the criterion of the hotel. Now Syuen Hotel is besides known as the best metropolis hotel in Ipoh. Laos is a single-party socialist democracy. The capital metropolis is Vientiane. Other big metropoliss include LuangHYPERLINK hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luang_Prabang HYPERLINK hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luang_Prabang Prabang, Savannakhet, and Pakse. The official linguistic communication is Lao. Laos is a multi-ethnic state with the politically and culturally dominant Lao people doing up about 60 per centum of the population, largely in the Lowlandss. Assorted Mon-Khmer groups, the Hmong, and other autochthonal hill folks, accounting for 40 per centum of the population, live in the foothills and mountains. Laos scheme for development is based on bring forthing electricity from its rivers and selling the power to its neighbors , viz. Thailand, China, and Vietnam. Laos is practically a low cost state as is non that civilized and developed comparison to other states in this epoch. Their state development is manner far behind so compare to other states. Laos is the lone landlocked state in Southeast Asia, and its thickly forested landscape consists largely of rugged mountains. The highest of which is PhouHYPERLINK hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phou_Bia HYPERLINK hypertext transfer protocol: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phou_Bia Bia at 2,818 metres ( 9,245A foot ) , with some fields and tableland. Local tradition holds that there are three seasons ( rainy, cold and hot ) as the latter two months of the climatologically defined dry season are perceptibly hotter than the earlier four months. Laos has a really good quality dirt that really helps on agribusiness activities. Subsistence agribusiness still accounts for half of the GDP and provides 80 % of employment. Merely 4.01 % of the state is cultivable land, and a mere 0.34 % used as lasting harvest land. The lowest per centum in the Greater Mekong Sub part and rice dominates agribusiness, with approximately 80 % of the cultivable land c ountry used for turning rice. Subsistence agribusiness is self-sufficiency agriculture in which the husbandmans focus on turning adequate nutrient to feed themselves and their households. The typical subsistence farm has a scope of harvests and animate beings needed by the household to feed and dress themselves during the twelvemonth. The labour cost at Laos is really inexpensive as most of the people do nt mind making any difficult occupation to gain money and survive at that place. After detecting all the pros and cons of Laos, Mr.Yan decided to put at Laos and use his hotel line concern and use the advantages in Laos. Mr Yan practically used all the expertness and recourses that he have from Malaysia and import to Laos to develop the concern in Laos. He focused on chiefly on hotel line concern and so he invested besides invested on tea, herbs, bird nest and wood trade furniture. Syuen Corporation established another corporation name called Dansavanh hotel group stand foring Syuen Corporation in Malaysia. In 1997 the Malayan Syuen Corporation started to develop Laos s largest resort on more than 18000 hectar of national park land on island in the reservoir behind the Nam Ngum dam.One of the company s first act is to put up a proverb factory to treat the lumber logged from the development country ( Dhirendra K. , 2001 ) . Then they build the first hotel called the Nam Ngum Resort and so followed by the Vientiane Hotel. Syuen Corporation signed master understandi ng with the Laos s authorities on 6 January 2006 and unfastened Nam Ngum Resort which is the first eco touristry resort. These hotels improved the touristry of Laos as it attracted people from other states which finally increased the currency exchange. Besides that, Syuen Corporation opened tea fabricating company and lumber fabrication company over the old ages. The thought is to fabricate good quality tea and wood trade furniture with low labour cost and export to states like Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam with good monetary value. This helped the company to gain good net income as they export choice stuff with a better monetary value so other rivals. Analysis Addition Grow chance It may sound general, but it is undeniable as this is one of the chief grounds for company to put to another state. The Syuen Corporation proprietor senses the chances presented in the state, therefore moved early to come in the market. Back in 1997, the company already started to develop the largest resort in Laos ( Dhirendra K. , 2001 ) . Fast forward to today, the return are stupefying, the corporation now own a resort with golf nine and casino, a 4-star hotel and two more hotels in building ( Dansavanh Hotel, n.d. ) . The rise in figure of tourer in Laos in recent old ages has boosted the touristry industry in the state, particularly hospitality industry. The hotel line concern in Laos benefited greatly from the growing of touristry as the hotels are aiming upscale travelers, which are 12 % from 1000000s of traveler to Laos. Furthermore, the hotel besides offer touristry bundle at their hotel as add-on to their growth gross and capitalise on the touristry tendency in Laos, where the authorities announced 2012 to be Visit Laos Year. Apart from that, the corporation hotel in Malaysia besides provide touristry bundle that finish are traveling to Laos which include adjustment in their ain hotel. The move to put in another state gained the company diverseness in their concern and besides growing in term of figure market served. Low labour cost Laos remain as one of the state that the labour cost are comparatively low. Syuen Corporation ventured into the state and enjoys low cost in term of rewards, and allows them to hold higher net income border. The low cost status non merely benefited the hotel concern line, but besides the Corporation s tea plantation and wood trade furniture concern. despite the low cost of labour in the state, Syuen Corporation still face small competition as the menace of new entryway are really low, as Laos ranked 163 overall in Ease of Doing Business rank out of 185 economic systems ( The World Bank, 2012 ) . The company addition benefit of the first mover advantage as they are one of the most early company to put up sawmill and furniture fabrication in the state. They besides remain as few of the company from Malaysia to bask the low cost advantages. Synergy from diverse concern The low labour cost besides encouraged the company to venture into different industries, other than their chief hotel line concern, as mentioned in the debut portion of this assignment. Most of their concern in other industries synergized good with their chief concern. For an blink of an eye, the Corporation engagements in tea plantation and wood trade furniture industry in the state besides contribute to their hotel concerns. High quality tea are produced to be used in the hotel and besides export, this cut down the cost of acquiring tea therefore increases the net income border of the Corporation. Similarly, the most of the furniture in the hotel are wood trade furniture of their ain. This in bend saves the cost of puting up hotels in Laos, and the tea and furniture gain free exposure and advertisement to tourist. Furthermore, the tea and furniture are besides exported to Malaysia, and the Corporation hotel can acquire in a low monetary value compared to the market monetary value. The synergism created is good to their concerns. Shortcoming Lao Government Forest Policy Harmonizing to J A ; C Expat Service, if want to get down a concern in Laos can be really ambitious because Laos is considered one of the most hard states in the universe in get downing a concern ( J A ; C, 2012 ) . Therefore, Syuen Corporation is confronting few defects when come ining Laos to spread out their concern. First and first, the geographical location of Laos is covered by many mountains, fields and tableland. There are over 70 % of Laos consists of rain forests ( Globalaware.org ) . Therefore, deforestation is the major impact on Laos which besides indirectly affect Syuen Corporation concern at Laos particularly the lumber and sawmill concern. Syuen Corporation set up sawmills to treat the lumber logged from the development country ( World Rainforest Movement and Forest Monitor 1998, 53 ) . The environmental jobs that encountered by Laos particularly deforestation is acquiring more serious as spread outing commercial development of the forest and programs for extra hydr oelectric installations. Therefore, in order to continue valuable hardwoods for commercial extraction and to protect the forest environment, Lao authorities decided to put quota logging. Besides, the determination of puting the sum of quotas is complex and no transparence. Initially, the state will subject a figure to the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry ( MAF ) . The figures will be go throughing through many ministries and the determination is made without any audience with functionaries from the Division of Inventory and Planning in the Department of Forestry ( Vajpeyi, 2001 ; Southavilay and Castren 1999 ) . Then, MAF will portion the quota between the states and most of the states will acquire quota far below the lumber processing capacity in that state ( Vajpeyi, 2001 ) . Consequently, Syuen Corporation s sawmills concern will be affected the most due to the quota logging set by the Lao authorities. Infrastructure low Laos is an developing state, the hapless entree, short of substructure and many undeveloped finish are curtailing the growing of the hotel and touristry industry in the metropolis. There are merely 5 air hoses serve the Wattay International Airport, from regional metropoliss such as Bangkok, Hanoi, Kuala Lumpur and Phnom Penh. ( Horwathhtl.com, 2011 ) Therefore, to entree to the metropolis of Laos is really limited. Therefore, the incommodiousness of entree ability in Laos will impact the cordial reception concern of Syuen Corporation. Furthermore, Laos is confronting the obstructions of set uping Internet connectivity due to the deficiency of accomplishments and resources. The Internet connectivity in Laos is a slow procedure which indicated by the low degrees of Personal computer incursion and hapless telecommunications web ( Thongvilu and Houphanh, 1996 ) . Although major towns are connected in Laos, puting a call between towns is frequently hard. Such incommodiousness and deficie ncy of substructure might impact the public presentation of Syuen Corporation concern in Laos particularly hotel concern of Syuen. As the Internet connectivity service is low, the managerial section of Syuen Corporation at Laos will be affected and diminish the efficiency of the employees. In add-on, clients might hold bad experience with the WiFi service provided by the Syuen Corporation hotels in Laos. Education degree and wellness service low The instruction degree at Laos is non every bit high as other developed states, the standard quality of the post-secondary school non high so they lack of professionalism and skill labour. This will impact employees public presentation of Syuen Corporation. Besides, the medical services at Laos really limited and low criterion, doing the happening of morbidity is high and this will led to the reluctant of tourers come to Lao. Harmonizing to Prof. Dr. Somboune Phomtavong, Prof. Dr. Kongsap Akkhavong and Dr. Somchanh Xaisida ( 2005 ) the deficiency of clean H2O, hapless sanitation, unequal nutrition and limited entree wellness services are worsening factors, which influence morbidity, peculiarly in rural countries. Furthermore, low quality local wise mans, pedagogues and trainers in public wellness direction plans. Furthermore, the geting scientific discipline and engineering accomplishments are restricted due to the low degree of the basic instruction and foreign linguistic communica tion cognition. Other than that, Lao Government requires that a company may hold up to 10 % of its employees as aliens if those aliens are unskilled, or up to 20 % if they are skilled. In all instances, they must acquire blessing from authorities in their employment. The company must obtain permission from authorities in order to increase the per centum of foreign workers it employs ( Jclao.com, 2012 ) . Recommendations Send for preparation and implement preparation plans One of the defects that operating concern in Laos is the instruction degree of this state is low. Most of the Laos people are non adept and knowing. They are lack of cognition to manage the extremely skill undertakings. So Syuen Corporation can direct the unskilled workers and workers who lack of experience to the Syuen Corporation hotel in Laos ( Vientiane Hotel and Nam Ngum Resort ) in order to larn how to execute all the undertakings. For illustration, larn how to clean the invitee suites, how to pass on decently with invitees, how to cover with the reserve and 1 on 1 concern phone calls. After the Laos workers learnt how to execute the undertakings, they can better their public presentation. Besides that, the company besides can supply some preparation plans for those unskilled Laos workers. One of the illustrations can be English Language preparation plan. The Syuen Corporation can offer English linguistic communication developing plan to do certain that all the workers can unde rstand and talking the English linguistic communication fluently. This plan is of import for the workers because most of the hotel income addition is from the foreign tourers. So it is of import for the workers to understand and talk English linguistic communication fluently due to English linguistic communication is the International Language. After their English accomplishments improved, their public presentation besides can be improved. The workers can improved in ability to react to inquiries or petitions and offer aid in English or ability to take part in 1-on-1 concern phone calls in English. Once the employees public presentation was improved, the client satisfaction will follow to better. And it will impact the company repute and net incomes. Finally it can keep and beef up the company competitory advantages. There has a successful instance that an organisation can better its public presentation by implemented the English linguistic communication developing plan. The organisation is Hilton International Incorporate. With a mostly English-speaking client base that demands the highest degree of quality and service, Hilton needed a planetary scheme for constructing the concern English communicating accomplishments of its employees to assist present on its trade name promise. After careful rating, Hilton implemented the GlobalEnglish Corporate Learning Servicea„? ( presently known as GlobalEnglish Edgea„? ) on a world-wide footing and has realized important productiveness and public presentation betterments ( GlobalEnglish, 2011 ) . Furthermore, there besides a successful instance that the company sends the employee for preparation can better the employee public presentation. SCA Company let the worker to go to a 2 hebdomad preparation plan at one of SCA s European offices in Goth enburg, Sweden. The plan was filled up with meetings and installation Tourss with squads from merchandise classs, R A ; D, sourcing and provider development. The employee said that she was able to rapidly larn about SCA s concerns, merchandises and markets around the universe, and aline itself with the planetary platforms and patterns within a short clip ( Vivian B. , 2009 ) . Joint venture with Airline Company By holding a hotel in an developing state with short of resources and substructure, it makes tourers holding troubles in turn uping the hotel itself, every bit mentioned before, there are merely five air hoses that serve the Wattay Airport, happening the manner to the hotel from the airdrome itself can be slippery and inconvenient to most of the foreign tourers, non to state researching the metropolis without any aid and counsel from a trusted beginning can be worrying. By holding above job, Syuen is suggested to see an agreement of joint venture with one of the air hoses in order to fulfill client more by supplying a bundle of services to them, starts from the air hoses, allow clients to wing to Laos, and picking up invitees from the airdromes and into the hotel and return, it can be a joint ventures of the hotel itself or develop a whole new set or bundle of services and offer it to the tourers, supplying all transit and circuit guiding services which they able to bask one time the y disembark from their planes and arrive Laos. With the aid from the air hoses spouse, this action able to foster satisfy more visitants, guaranting they have a safer journey within the period they spent in Laos, allowing them to hold a more convenient and comfy journey. On the other manus, by holding this set of services, it able to convert and pull more possible clients, by introduce the services to them, as sing an undeveloped state is ever perceived as insecure and hazardous by most of the aliens, a safe and comfy journey is ever the chief concern in traveling. The scenario of a joint venture understanding between an air hose and a hotel can be seen in the Shanghai International Airport Hotel, as it is a joint venture endeavor by Chinese Eastern Air, which they provides a free bird coach to and from Shanghai Pudong International Airport and the Shanghai International Airport hotel mentioned. While in the hotel anteroom and all the guestrooms, the flight activity will be show through a proctor for every invitee to maintain path of their flight information. And the Shanghai International Airport hotel besides provides air ticket engagement services and multiple location flight check-in services in the anteroom ( Sinohotel, n.d. ) . However, it is still suggested that Syuen Hotel should offer more services in footings of transit, guiding, compared to Shanghai International Airport Hotel, and put clients safety at the first topographic point as the hotel is located in Laos which normally perceived as undeveloped and insecure by the foreigners, to guarantee all the invitees have a pleasant journey, and procuring Syuen s competitory advantages. While the labour cost in Laos is comparatively low as mentioned earlier, Syuen is expected to be able to carry on this program with easiness while basking low cost advantage. Enhance Relationship with Laos Government From antecedently discussed, Syuen Corporation s sawmills concern had been affected due to the quota logging set by the Laos Government. In order to cover with this menace, it is important for Syuen Corporation s to keep a good or positive relationship with the Laos Government senior functionaries such as forces from Kong kouat ka Sapha-nyakone Pa Mai every bit known as Forest Inspection Department ( FID ) in order to hold more quotas on logging the forests and recommend the senior functionaries to strike the illegal logging activities inside the state. However, it is hard for Syuen Corporation s to make so because Laos Government senior functionaries do non ever swear on the logging companies due to the hazard of losing of import administrative places for unsuitably to O.K.ing logging operations as has happened to some senior authorities functionaries in the past. Therefore, Syuen Corporation s can near senior functionaries together with the other sure authorities functionaries, 1 s who can move as surety or give confidence that nil improper will happen in order to derive confident and trust from the Laos Government senior functionaries. Furthermore, Syuen Corporation s can offer profit sharing based on the frequenter client relation to the Laos Government may in term of pecuniary or others to demo the earnestnesss and truenesss of the company toward the Laos Government. Search for logging quota option Besides of normal logging quota, Syuen Corporation s can seek for particular logging quotas that offer by the Laos Government as option. One of the illustrations of the particular logging quotas can be use by the Syuen Corporation s is deadwood logging quotas ( quota mai leep lunar excursion module ) which allow Syuen Corporation s to roll up trees which are already dead such as standing dead tree ( Deadwood ) from wherever country they can be found in wood without limitation ( Baird, 2010 ) . This will let Syuen Corporation s have more forests and stuff to back up the company sawmill s concern besides of normal logging quota. In twelvemonth 2007, a logging quota of deadwood was issued by the Champasak Province in southwesterly Laos to Development of Agriculture and Forestry Industries Company ( DAFI ) for the rosewood and the quota did non stipulate the measure to be cut and the logging site ( Baird, 2010 ) . Decision A few old ages back, Syuen Corporation chief concern is in Malaysia hotel industry, as they continue to turn, their venture into Laos have gained them market portion in 2 different states. Their first mover advantages in Laos are still steadfast, as the state remain a difficult topographic point to travel for new venture. Furthermore, their investing in Laos including the tea plantation and sawmill concern synergized good with their chief concern. However there remain some defects in Laos, such as the authorities wood policy which limit the growing of sawmill concern of Syuen Corporation, and besides low substructure degree, instruction degree and medical service. Therefore, we have come out with 4 recommendations to counter the defect and better the company competitory advantages. We recommended workers to be Send for preparation and implement preparation plans, joint venture with Airline Company, enhance relationship with Laos s authorities, and in conclusion hunt for logging quota alternate. As the option are proven to be practical, as they are either applied by other company or support by diary articles, we hope that the recommendation will be implemented and assist the company.
